Intent
Our vision is to nurture artistic exploration at every level, progress creative skills and build the foundations for a love, respect and understanding of art in all forms. Our Art education begins in Early Years with opportunities for early mark making and exploration of art materials and equipment. Through to our Functional Pathway where pupils can chose to develop their interest in the Arts at a deeper level through Duke of Edinburgh, Options and ASDAN. Our curriculum offer provides opportunities which enables our pupils from all pathways to explore at a sensory level to developing key skills.
The intent is to ensure all pupils produce creative, imaginative work. Children have the opportunity to explore their ideas and record their experiences, as well as exploring a range of diverse artists. Children will become confident in a variety of techniques including drawing, painting, sculpting, as well as other selected craft skills, e.g. collage, printing, weaving and patterns.
Children will also develop their knowledge of famous artists, designers and craft makers. Children will develop their interest and curiosity about art and design through a series of lessons offering skills progression, knowledge progression and offering children the opportunity to ask questions and demonstrate their skills in a variety of ways.
The lessons will offer the chance for children to develop their emotional expression through art to further enhance their personal, social and emotional development. This progression grid can support any subject leader or teacher of art to ensure progression of skills and knowledge.
Implementation
Our school is formed into four pathways which all explore Art in the most purposeful way for their cohort. Each are designed to spike curiosity with cross curricular links and offer opportunity for skill progression. The skills we focus on as a school are:

In Multi-sensory, Engagement and Progression Art is taught through a topic-based approach in order for it to make it meaningful links and concepts for our pupils. Each key stage focuses on different themes to ensure continued interest in the subject as well as acquiring new knowledge. In Functional Art learning is an optional area to be explored at a deeper level with an emphasis on pupils choosing themes and skills which they are wanting to develop.
These topics or themes are broken down into the different areas of learning to provide a variety of experiences and opportunities for pupils to develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design.
Impact
Art and design learning is loved by teachers and pupils across school. Teachers have high expectations and collect quality evidence of progress through Art folders, sketchbooks, topic books and using Evidence for Learning. Children improve their enquiry skills and inquisitiveness about the world around them, and their impact through art and design on the world. Art enables pupils to gain from sensory experiences by exploring a wide range of different art materials and mediums. Through art-based activities, learners are developing their creative communication in order to display their own preferences, thoughts and ideas.
